Unfoonk's Young Thugs Brother Nine-Year Prison Sentence: A Violation that Echoes through the Music Industry

 

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and WSB-TV recently reported that Unfoonk, the older brother of rapper Young Thug, has been sentenced to nine years and six months in prison for violating the terms of his probation. This development comes after Unfoonk's arrest for firearm possession last month, which was a clear violation of his probation. Unfoonk, whose real name is Quantavious Grier, was initially put on probation after pleading guilty in December 2022 to violating Georgia's RICO Act and theft by receiving stolen property. These charges were part of the same case Young Thug is currently on trial for. Grier accepted a plea deal that resulted in a sentence of 12 years, with two years commuted, and 10 years of probation.  

Additionally, he was required to perform 750 hours of community service and adhere to a curfew from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Probation Violation and Arrest On May 4, Grier was arrested once again in Atlanta, this time for possessing a firearm as a convicted felon and associating with a criminal street gang to participate in illegal activity.

 According to WSB-TV, Grier was found parked at a BP gas station in a black Mercedes G-Wagon, surrounded by a group of individuals near the driver's side door. Plainclothes officers considered this gathering a possible drug deal. When the SUV drove away, the officers stopped it, citing a window tint violation and detecting the smell of marijuana, which is still illegal in Georgia. During the arrest, law enforcement officers noticed a handgun in plain view inside the vehicle.

 Grier claimed the gun was clean, raising suspicions that he was aware of its presence. This arrest marked a serious breach of the terms of his probation, particularly considering his previous conviction. Sentencing and Judge's Decision At the sentencing, Judge Ural Glanville highlighted that Grier had not paid $141.08 in probation fees or initiated his community service. However, the decisive factor in the judge's decision was Grier being caught with a firearm.

 Judge Glanville pointed out that Grier was explicitly prohibited from possessing a gun as part of his probation. Although Grier's attorney requested a two-year prison sentence for probation revocation, the judge opted for a longer sentence of nine years due to the firearm-related offense and Grier's failure to comply with probation conditions.
